Beaded Trim

My Talented Friend, Bridget
My Talented Friend, Bridget
My friend, Bridget, is so clever. She is a one-of-a-kind, a IMG_5547skilled Jill of all trades. She's the one you want during the zombie apocalypse. She's a skilled outdoorswoman, a competent motorcyclist, a mean zydeco dancer (see picture at left), a dog whisperer and an unpretentious cook. She's got a hardy laugh and a heart as deep as the Grand Canyon. She's a humanitarian and works as a nurse to earn her keep. She was my college roommate at the University of Minnesota in the 80s, and she's also one of my dearest friends. Recently I spent a few days with Bridget at her VT abode. We entertained ourselves in the day by mountain biking and hiking, and she taught me how to add beaded embellishments to my jacket at night.

When I last saw her, I was impressed with what I thought was the Carhartt brand adding a little feminine twist to their rugged, utilitarian clothing line.

I should have known better. It was Bridget's own hand who added the beaded trim to her jacket. Being the consummate DIY-er, I told her she needed to show me how to spiff up my outdoor gear.

A Closet Audit (or What Not to Wear)

Carrie Humphreys, CAbi Stylist
Doesn't every fashion-minded girl dream of having her own personal stylist? I know I do. Recently I had my fashion forward friend, Carrie Humphreys, Independent Cabi Stylist, come to my house to help me with a Closet Audit.   What is a closet audit? It's basically like that show "What Not to Wear" except that Carrie doesn't make snarky comments like Clinton & Stacy did, and she doesn't make you throw away your whole wardrobe. Basically, Carrie worked with the clothes in my closet and put together 50 outfits using what was already there. She also made additional suggestions for matching or adding shoes, handbags, belts, scarves and even jewelry to complement the various outfits. Carrie likes a challenge, too. You know that shirt, skirt, or jacket that you loved when you first bought it, but have never been able to figure out what to pair it with? Carrie was able to help me with a few of my closet "orphans".

How long does it take?  Carrie spent about three hours at my house, going through my clothes, having me try on different pieces, matching items, taking pictures, and giving me feedback on what fit and what didn't.  I was also given a homework assignment prior to her visit.  First and foremost, I had to clean out my closet. (Carrie didn't tell me to do that, but I thought that it was time for some spring cleaning.) I organized and refolded clothes, I made a pile of clothes to be donated or consigned, and a pile that needed to be mended or taken to the dry cleaners. Then, per Carrie's instructions, I pulled out a few of my favorite "go to" outfits, so she could get a sense of my style. I also selected items that I was excited to wear this season, but that I needed help in how to mix and match them with other items. Continue reading A Closet Audit (or What Not to Wear)
