My creative space needs an overhaul! I've wanted to hire a decorator to help me with my office for some time, but have procrastinated because of the expense. After hearing me bemoan my office situation, my thirteen-year-old said, "Mom, you're creative. You can do it yourself. You don't need to pay someone." Man, I love this girl. I'll at least try to do it myself before I call in the professionals. In terms of what to change, my "Aha Moment" came when I actually photographed my office. I highly recommend doing this before you decide to redecorate a room because it allows you to look at your space a bit more objectively. I quickly saw some of the problems with my decor choices, and I think you will see them too. Problem #1: My Window Treatments—My window treatments, drapes from Tuesday Morning, really left something to be desired. I never realized how awkward these drapes looked until I saw this picture. Yikes! The drapes are too short and too thin. I really like the look of bamboo window shades below. The previous curtains (which used to also have a draping swag) were also too formal for the space. Problem #2: My Rug — Although I loved this 100% wool rug when we first bought it ten years ago, it is obviously too busy for the room. The rug adds to the room's chaos. Due to all the books, and crafting tools, I think a solid colored rug would look a lot better. Perhaps a sisal or a chenille rug. Problem #3: Computer, Modem, & Printer Cords—There has to be a clever way to hide those cords, and I am bound and determined to find one. Problem #4: Light fixture incoherence — If you notice, I have a mishmash of light fixtures from HomeGoods, Arhaus, Target, etc., to compensate for a lack of overhead lighting. I'm thinking I might like to have a few pendant lights over my work space. I will share my office overhaul as I make progress. Tips & suggestions welcome.
